Home » Web Design Blog » TrueHit News » How to Keep Safe and Secure on the Web – Part 1: Update Your Operating System & Browser

We at TrueHit Designs are creating a series of easy-to-use guides on keeping the average personal and business computer safe and secure. While it is highly unlikely any of our guides will cause you problems, we preface the information found in these guides by highly recommending you backup your data before using our guides and/or asking your local IT professional, or contacting TrueHit Designs, before using our guides. If your computer is very dated, seven years or older, or has a unique configuration a problem may occur. If you have a newer computer and are an average user our guides should be safe to use! These guides are to help you keep your computer updated and as such, it is common for a computer, or a program, to need a reboot in order to complete the update changes, please consider this while updating. It is best to take a few minutes for yourself, save and close all important documents before continuing.

Updating Your Operating System

In this section we cover updating your Windows 7 and Mac operating systems. While you may find many guides on updating Windows XP and Windows Vista via a Google Search, we highly recommend upgrading to Windows 7 as it is far more secure and user friendly than both of the previous Microsoft operating systems.

Why Should I Update My Operating System?

Updating your operating system helps to keep your software secure from possible newly found exploits which can end up with your data stolen or damaged by malicious people and other computers.

Updating Your Web Browsers (Windows 7)

In this section we cover updating your web browser.

Why Should I Update My Web Browsers?

Updating your web browser is very important to keeping your data secure from theft or damage by malicious people and other computers.

The browser which is most used for personal and business use is Internet Explorer. This is mainly due to the fact that the Windows operating system comes with this browser bundled. Internet Explorer is also ranked as one of the poorest functioning web browser with the most security vulnerabilities. Hackers understand how popular Internet Explorer is and focus on breaking into that browser for efficiency in their malicious activities. There are other web browsers to choose from which are more secure, much faster, show “cleaner” web pages and all are free.

TrueHit Designs strongly recommends using either Firefox or Google Chrome. While it may seem intimidating to switch, both programs make it a breeze to change. When you first run either programs they will ask if you wish to import your bookmarks, saved passwords and other data. Links from your email box and other programs will also automatically open in your newly chosen web browser.

We at TrueHit Designs are here to save you time! So here are the main differences between FireFox and Chrome:

Firefox
More user friendly than Chrome for new or casual computer users.
Can “show” web pages more cleanly than Chrome.

Chrome
Is the fastest web browsers. Hold on to your seat.
Has the most viewing area for web pages.

We hope you make the choice to move to one of the above browsers if you are currently using Internet Explorer.
